Defense Department Schools Use Caucus to Create Online Virtual Campus
Caucus program focuses on faculty development
Washington, DC, April 7, 1997 Screen Porch LLC and the Department of Defense Dependent's Schools (DoDDS) announced today that DoDDS has chosen Caucus Web-based groupware from Screen Porch as the platform for its virtual campus aimed at professional development of DoDDS teachers. The DoDDS school system includes two hundred schools on military bases around the world. The system serves nearly one hundred thousand students.
DoDDS courses developed with Caucus cover a wide range of subjects, including the use of the Internet and the Web in curriculum and classroom and exploring global communities with technology. These courses have been delivered around the world. Course participants come together on the World Wide Web, using Caucus to meet faculty and experts. The distributed educational network makes it possible for both faculty and students to be located anywhere in the world.
The DoDDS project has been guided by a consulting company and registered Screen Porch Business partner. "I have found that this Internet class and discussion has helped me to be a very good point of contact in my school. I would advise all points of contact in the future, whether support staff or teachers, to take this class," said Ruthi Brock of the JASON Project through DoDDS .
Screen Porch president Tom Mandel comments: "We are pleased that Caucus has been chosen for this important project. Educational institutions around the world see the importance of distance learning and the online environment. We are happy that DoDDS, like so many other institutions, will be using Caucus to support this critical application."
